Bio: Relatives include the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like body temperatures, creep inside the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the insects begin to move out. As they go away, the beetles rub up in opposition to the pollen within the male flowers and are actually ready to hold the pollen to a nearby feminine flower. Only a handful of these strange Indonesian crops bloom annually at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the only identified garden in the area that grows this unique species.
